Diwali is popularly known as the “festival of lights!”
It is a five-day festival that starts on Dhanteras (Dhantrayodashi) and ends on Bhaubeej, celebrated on the second lunar day of Shukla paksha (bright fortnight) of the Hindu calendar month ‘Kartik’.
A Diya (divaa, deepa, deepam, or deepak) is an oil lamp usually made from clay, with a cotton wick dipped in ghee or vegetable oils. Clay diyas are often used temporarily as lighting for special occasions.
